Recipe: Sustainable Tuna Fish Fritters
I am both a creature of habit and a bit of a lazy cook. Which often means that I end up making the same simple recipes over and over again.
Luckily though, this job forces me outside of my comfort zone, so that I can come up with new and exciting recipes to share with you all.
That's exactly how these delicious tuna fritters came to be.
I found myself wanting to experiment with some tinned tuna. Oceans MSC-certified chunk light tuna has been my go-to for months now and the high-quality of the skipjack makes it incredibly versatile.
Ocean's Skipjack Tuna is sustainably harvested using purse seine from MSC fisheries in different parts of the world. As an MSC certified fishery, the fishery has met sustainability criteria related to fish stocks, environmental impact, and fisheries management.
Ocean Optimism for Sustainable Tuna Fisheries
And luckily for me and all tuna lovers around the world, we recently got some very uplifting news about the status of global tuna stocks. The latest report on the State of the World Fisheries and Aquaculture from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations reported that 82.5% of the seafood that we eat comes from sustainable sources. Which marks a 3.9% increase from the last time this report was published.
While it's good news for global fisheries overall, it's even better news for higher market value fisheries, like tuna. The report also found that two thirds of the top ten species fished, including tuna, are being fished sustainably. This tells us that tuna fisheries are being very well managed and their long-term sustainability is headed in the right direction.

MSC certified tuna
While some species, like bluefin tuna, have struggled, today, 50% of the worldβs tuna is engaged in the MSC program.
Of the 5.8 million tons of tuna caught, 28.9% is from a fishery that is already MSC certified and a fifth (20.4%) is currently being tested to the MSC Standard.
The science-based MSC certification scheme checks tuna stocks are healthy and are being managed well, and that the fishery has minimized its impact on the ecosystem. That includes measures to minimize interactions with other marine species, such as dolphins, turtles and seabirds.

Easy, sustainable tuna fish fritters
Canned tuna is versatile and exciting (yes, you can make more than tuna sandwiches with it!) and this tuna fish cake recipe is proof. This delicious fritters are simple, easy to make, and super affordable. AND they taste amazing!
Frying pan
Mixing bowl
1 tin of Ocean's chunk light tuna
1 egg
1/2 cup corn
2 tbsp flour
1/2 bunch of parsley, finely chopped
1/2 red onion, chopped
2 tsp chili flakes
juice from 1/2 lemon
Combine all ingredients together in a bowl and stir well.
Heat 2 tbsp of olive oil in a frying pan.
Shape the mixture into 1 inch thick patties.
Fry for three minutes on each side or until golden brown.
Serve with tzatziki.
