If you find yourself in Lagos, you absolutely must go on a kayak tour through the stunning caves and grottos along the coast line. Kayaking through the grottos gives you a much more unique vantage point than seeing them from land and provides you with a fun, new experience to cross off your bucket list.

While I was in Lagos, I embarked on a kayak and snorkel tour with Kayak Adventures. Kayak Adventures runs this tour twice a day: once at 9:30 am and once at 12:30 pm. If you want to try to avoid the heat I recommend opting for the morning tour.

I wanted to appreciate the warm weather and work on my tan, so I chose to partake in the 1 pm tour. The meeting point is very easy to find inside the harbor jetty of Praia de Batata. Upon arriving at the Kayak Adventures meeting point the friendly crew will greet you and check you in before providing you with a waterproof bag to secure your belongings on the kayak.

Once everyone has their belongings secured, is lathered up in sunscreen and has cold water, it’s time for a quick kayak lesson before heading out on the water! The kayak tour is escorted out of the harbor and along the coastline by a support boat that is there to provide assistance if needed.

Our kayaking guides were very funny and didn’t try to rush the tour along, but instead seemed like they were enjoying it just as much as we were. Our guide stopped every once in a while to let everyone relax and have a drink while he provided us with some interesting history about the Lagos grottos.

After about 90-minutes of kayaking, we arrived at a secluded beach where we had some time to snorkel or just relax and enjoy the sunshine. I found a cute little cave to nestle in and opted for the latter.

After our time on the beach, it was time to make the journey back to the harbor. We were given the option here to either kayak back or be towed back behind the boat. Our group was feeling very energetic that day and decided that we would kayak back. My noodle arms might not have agreed, but it was well worth it! Kayaking allowed us to squeeze into small caves and grottos and see details up close that we would never have been able to see from a boat.

The tour arrived back at the harbor just before 1 pm – perfect timing for us to grab some delicious Portuguese lunch after our little workout!

Overall, this was a really great experience and by far one of the best ways to experience Lagos.

The tour is not super intense, so don’t worry if you’re a beginner or traveling with children; everyone is welcome!

Being able to duck into caves and spend some time on a secluded beach was well worth the effort and one of the highlights of our time in Lagos.
