On a record cold day in Florida, when the conditions weren’t ideal for diving, we headed out to West Palm Beach to visit Manatee Lagoon and see some sea cows. The name is quite fitting for these large creatures that move lethargically through the sea.

Manatee Lagoon is a perfect spot to sight these animals because of the warmer water recycled back into the inlet from the nearby energy planet.

Manatee’s and I are very similar in that we both hate the cold, so they often gather in the lagoon as the water temperature is much warmer than the rest of the ocean, especially from November-March, which Manatee Lagoon deems “Manatee Season”.

Admission to Manatee Lagoon is free and in addition to the outdoor viewing platforms, there is an indoor education center and gift shop for those looking to a piece of Manatee Lagoon home with them.

I would love to see a manatee. I’m reading one of David Attenborough’s books at the moment (it’s an updated version of things that happened at the start of his career) and there’s a bit about where he’s trying to catch a manatee, and it took them ages to find it and they were in the middle of nowhere. So, it’s awesome that you can see them so easily in Florida.
