Chances are you’ve heard about acai bowls; they’re been all the hype in the health industry recently, and for a good reason; they’re absolutely amazing! I’ve been making myself bowls at home for a few months now, using freeze dried powder from a local health food store. I thought the bowls I made were pretty good; until I landed in paradise I graced my taste buds with the local flavours of Hawaii’s acai bowls. If you ever find yourself on the island of Oahu, be sure to check out these local spots for some amazing fresh flavor.

Ama Ama Restaurant (Disney Aulani)

Processed with VSCOcam with s3 preset

This restaurant is actually within the Disney resort, however you don’t need to be a guest at the resort to enjoy their acai bowl. The bowl at Ama Ama is served up in more of a sorbet style, with a very frozen ice cream scoop size of blended acai and is topped with granola, coconut, raspberries, blackberries, and cocoa nibs.

Island Vintage Coffee

These adorable coffee shops are sprinkled throughout the island and with one conveniently located in the Ko’Olina resort area; it’s where I had breakfast every morning. The options at Island Vintage Coffee are straightforward; an acai bowl or an acai smoothie. The menu is short and the bows cannot be customized as they can in other places, however, with six days straight of breakfasts as proof, I can say I don’t think customization was necessary! The bowls are HUGE, it took me at least half an hour to finish every morning. They come topped with organic granola, bananas, strawberries, blueberries, and honey. You definitely don’t want to miss this spot while you’re in Oahu; there’s a reason the lineup is always pouring out the front door!

Haleiwa Bowls

Of course, I’ve saved the best for last! If you find yourself on the North Shore, you need to make a stop at Haleiwa bowls. And if you don’t have plans to head up to the North Shore, you need to rearrange your pans ASAP; this is not one that you wanna miss! To begin you get to choose between a “blend bowl” and a “surf” bowl; the blend bowl being more of a frozen smoothie consistency blended with acai and other fresh berries and the surf bowl being more of a sorbet style of just blended acai. You then get to choose whether you want a small or a large size bowl. Both style bowls come topped with granola, coconut, honey, and banana. Then the fun part comes in; you get to choose the rest of your toppings! They have every fresh fruit imaginable (if the mango is in season get it, you will not be disappointed!), and every other topping from almonds to wheatgrass. These were hands down, my favourite acai bowls ever! I’m already counting down the days until I can have them again.
